Speaks from Beyond the Grave


What we have here is a collection of readings from Burroughs' work, all of which were obtained from an old bootleg cassette. As far as I know these recordings are not currently commercially available, although all of them have existed on vinyl at some point, a detail evident from the odd crackle to be heard between Bill's insectoid drawling.

The tape was simply marked William Burroughs - Volume 1, and had the pseudo catalogue number of beat-6. It was 90 minutes long and of very poor quality. I have removed the tape hiss using Cool Edit Pro, a very useful program, although I have left the vinyl crackles and pops intact, mostly for aesthetic reasons. I was going to convert the cleaned up recording into mp3s, but a quick experiment revealed that for spoken word Real Audio is far superior, and has crunched the whole 90 minutes down to a measly 10Mb.
